Day 3 Philippine Eagle Center (4/6/2008, part 1 of 3)

We got up early as the itinerary for today is quite a lot and the locations are far apart. The 1st stop is Philippine Eagle Center, where the famous Pag-asa was born in captivity. It is located in Brgy. Calinan, which is an hour away from downtown. Luckily my cousin Eric has a car which makes the trip more convenient. We got lost a little bit as there are no signs indicating where the PEC is. One enters the Malagos water district 1st and inside is the PEC.

Entrance fees include P5 (P3 for kids) for the Malagos water district plus the PEC fee as indicated in the rates above.

The place is nice and looks like a huge garden. The eagle cages are huge and quite high. They are located at a higher level so it's quite difficult to get a good shot of the eagles. This is good for them though since they have a large area to fly around. There is also a fenced area with monkeys and I wonder if these are being fed to the eagles since the Philippine Eagle is also known as the monkey-eating eagle.

Aside from different breed of eagles, there were also different breed of owls there. One of these is the Grass Owls looking cute in the picture below. I think they're the baby owls in the right picture.

Since the place is also a garden, they've put descriptions to some of the plants there. One of these is the Peacock Fern. Another one which they also sell at the center is the flower at the right pic below. I can't recall its name though.

A small museum is also located in the center, showing some mummified philippine eagles. One of which is the mother of Pag-asa shown at the leftmost pic. There is also a kids corner for them to occupy their time while adults look at the displays. A sample of different eagle feathers can also be seen here (rightmost pic below).

We spent around an hour here and there are a lot of animals/plants to see. One can spend a lot more time here to really absorb the beauty of nature. The weather is also quite cool. Outside the watershed there were some students camping out and some taking a dip at the pool. Looks like they had a fun fieldtrip/camping. There were also some souvenir shops outside but I was not able to take a look at their goods. We planned to do our pasalubong shopping on our last day in Davao.
